The Impact of Google Instant on SEO
There has been quite a bit of speculation on the impact Google's new technology will
have on SEO. This is cool new tech, so of course people want to write about it, and the
impact on SEO makes for a good read. But the fact is, I'm not sure there will be any
real impact on how companies need to perform their SEO.
On the one hand, you have the fact that results will popping up while people type. So
this implies an increase pressure to gain a top 3 ranking for your big "short tail" terms.
But it's highly likely that you're already putting a lot of effort into rankings for those
terms.
On the other hand, Google Instant allows users to more easily drill down and refine their
searches, without having to perform another query; they simply keep typing. So this
would indicate an increased need for good "long tail" optimization. Which again, I
imagine you're already working on.
I'm not clear why anyone would think this update in any way kills SEO, as some have
said. As long as people search search engines, and click on the top results, there will
be firms helping companies get those results. I'm certain that within the first month of
the phone book's complicated algorithm, AAA Movers was created. Search optimization
goes a long way back, and I don't see it ending anytime soon.
